The 'tola' is a Vedic measure, with the name derived from the Sanskrit tol meaning weight. Historically the standard measure for trade in gold, the tola was the weight of 100 ratti seeds and was subsequently standardized as 11.6638 gms. The tola is steeped in the history of gold trade.
